“Am I Really Ready to Leave My Home?”

‍

Dear Sheri,

“I've lived in my home for 35 years. How do I know when it's time to leave?”

‍

----

‍

That was the question I heard recently from someone who was considering moving into independent living.

And I understood.

Because moving from your home isn't just about packing boxes.

It's about letting go of a chapter of your life.

Your home holds memories.

Maybe it's where you raised your children.

Maybe it's where you celebrated birthdays and holidays.

Maybe you've spent years working in the same kitchen, sitting in the same favorite chair, looking out the same window every morning.

So when someone says, “Maybe it's time to consider independent living,” it can feel like they're asking you to give up your independence.

But what if moving isn't really about giving up your independence?

What if it's about gaining a different kind of freedom?

“I Don't Need Assisted Living.”

I hear this one often.

And my response is:

“That's okay. You may not need assisted living.”

Bella Vista has both Independent Living and Assisted Living, because we understand that everyone's needs are different.

If you are living at home, still making your own decisions, getting yourself around, enjoying your daily routine, and managing most things independently, then independent living may be exactly what you're looking for.

Independent living isn't about someone taking over your life.

It's about creating an environment where you can continue to live your life—with fewer of the responsibilities that can become tiring as we get older.

What If You Could Keep Your Independence—Without Keeping All the Work?

Think about everything that comes with maintaining a home.

The yard.

The repairs.

The cleaning.

The cooking.

The grocery shopping.

The bills.

The constant list of things that need to be done.

Maybe you've been handling all of it for years.

But perhaps you're beginning to wonder:

“Do I really want to spend the next chapter of my life doing all of this?”

That's where independent living can offer something very special.

You can have a place of your own.

You can maintain your routines.

You can make your own choices.

You can enjoy your privacy.

But you can also have the opportunity for meals, activities, friendships, and a community around you.

And perhaps the biggest difference?

You don't have to do everything alone anymore.

“But I Like My Independence.”

Good. We want you to keep it.

At Bella Vista, our philosophy is to encourage residents to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.

If you can do something yourself, we want you to continue doing it.

If you want to get dressed yourself, wonderful.

If you want to make your own choices, absolutely.

If you want to participate in activities, meet new friends, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon, that's your choice.

Independent living should not mean someone is constantly telling you what to do.

It's your life.

And What Happens If My Needs Change?

This is one of the questions I think families should ask when looking at senior living.

Because none of us knows exactly what the future will bring.

Maybe today you're completely independent.

Maybe five years from now, you need a little more assistance.

That's one of the things that makes Bella Vista special.

Bella Vista offers both Independent Living and Assisted Living.

That means your needs can change without necessarily meaning you have to leave the community you have come to know and love.

Your journey may change.

Your level of support may change.

But the goal remains the same:

To provide the right level of support while respecting who you are and the independence you still have.

“I'm Afraid I'll Be Giving Up My Home.”

I understand that fear.

But I want you to consider something.

What if you aren't giving up your home?

What if you're choosing a new home?

A home where you don't have to worry about every repair.

A home where you can meet people.

A home where you can enjoy activities.

A home where meals and community are part of your day.

A home where you can still have your own space and your own routine.

A home where someone is nearby if you need a little help.

And a home where you don't have to wait until you are struggling to ask for support.

Don't Wait Until You Have To Move

This is something I wish more families understood.

You don't have to wait until something happens at home.

You don't have to wait until you're overwhelmed.

You don't have to wait until maintaining the house becomes too much.

You don't have to wait until your family is worried sick about you.

You can make a move while you're still independent.

And sometimes, that's actually the best time to do it.

You can move because you want more socialization.

You can move because you're tired of maintaining a house.

You can move because you want fewer responsibilities.

You can move because you want to meet new people.

You can move because you want to enjoy this next chapter of your life.

You don't have to move because you failed at living independently.

You can move because you're choosing something different.

Come See It Before You Decide

If you're currently living at home and wondering whether independent living might be right for you, I don't want you to make your decision based on a brochure or a picture online.

Come see us.

Walk through Bella Vista.

Ask questions.

See the Independent Living side.

Learn about the Assisted Living side.

Meet the people.

See the activities.

Look at the dining experience.

Take your time.

And most importantly, picture yourself here.

Don't ask yourself only:

“Can I live here?”

Ask:

“Could I enjoy living here?”

Could you see yourself having coffee with a new friend?

Could you see yourself sitting down to a meal without having to cook it?

Could you see yourself participating in an activity simply because it sounds fun?

Could you see yourself having fewer chores and more time?

Could you see yourself waking up in the morning knowing that you have people around you?

A Little Reminder From My Heart

If you're sitting in your home wondering if it's time for a change, please don't think of independent living as the end of your independence.

Think of it as the beginning of a new chapter.

You are not too young to look.

You are not committing to anything by taking a tour.

And you certainly don't have to make a decision the first time you walk through the door.

Come see.

Come ask questions.

Come have lunch.

Come meet our residents.

Come see what life at Bella Vista is really like.

And if you walk away thinking, “This isn't for me,” that's okay.

But you may walk away thinking something completely different:

“Maybe I don't have to give up my independence. Maybe I can actually enjoy it more.”

Because sometimes the best time to consider independent living isn't when you can no longer live at home.

It's when you're still independent enough to choose where you want your next chapter to begin.

And if that chapter ever changes, Bella Vista has both Independent Living and Assisted Living to help meet residents where they are.

Your life isn't ending when you move.

You're simply choosing where the next part of your story will be written.

‍

With love,

Sheri
