Dear Sheri

Dear Sheri: What Should We Watch for on a Medicare Statement?

Medicare fraud isn't always obvious. Here's what families should check on Medicare statements and medical bills each month.

Dear Sheri,‍

We hear so much about Medicare fraud, but what should seniors and their families actually watch for?

Dear Trying to Stay Safe,

Medicare fraud isn't always an obvious scam. Sometimes fraudulent charges can appear on a Medicare statement for services or equipment that were never received.

Families should make it a habit to review Medicare statements and medical bills carefully.

Watch for:

  • Services you never received
  • Medical equipment you never ordered
  • Providers you don't recognize
  • Duplicate charges
  • Prescriptions or services you don't remember receiving
  • Someone asking for your Medicare number without a legitimate reason

If something doesn't look right, ask questions.

Don't be afraid to say, “I don't remember receiving this service. Can you explain this charge?”

Being proactive can help catch problems early.

With love,

Sheri
